Pedro I assinou o decreto que estabeleceu as duas primeiras faculdades de Direito do país, uma em São Paulo e outra em Olinda. Essas instituições foram os marcos iniciais da formação acadêmica de juristas no Brasil.

O papel central da advocacia na preservação da justiça e na defesa dos direitos humanos levou a Associação dos Advogados do Brasil (hoje denominada Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil – OAB) a escolher essa data para celebrar a profissão e reconhecer sua importância para a sociedade.
