Uma pesquisa realizada pelo Semesp, sindicato das instituições de ensino superior privado, com 186 instituições apresentou os números de inadimplência de abril de 2020. Segundo a pesquisa, a taxa de inadimplência no ensino superior subiu para 25,5%, o número do mesmo período do ano passado era de 14,9%. Isso significa um aumento de 71,1% de um ano para o outro.
A projeção para o cumulado de 2020 é que a inadimplência varie entre 10,1% num cenário otimista e 11,2% no mais pessimista. Em 2019, a taxa foi de 9,5%.
Essa diferença muito se deve a pandemia de COVID-19, que fez com que o mundo todo adotasse o distanciamento social. Como consequência, as aulas presenciais foram suspensas e as instituições ou entraram de férias antecipadas ou aderiram ao EaD para todos os cursos. Além disso, uma parte significativa da população perdeu sua renda por conta do fechamento do comércio e outros segmentos da economia, causando a dificuldade no pagamento das suas contas.
Outro dado oferecido pela pesquisa é o crescimento da evasão escolar, o aumento foi de 11,5% se comparado ao mesmo período do ano passado. Em abril de 2019 a evasão representava 3,8% e agora em 2020 o número é de 4,3%.

O MEC publicou no Diário Oficial da União, uma portaria que autoriza instituições de ensino superior a substituir aulas presenciais por aulas a distância por conta do coronavírus. A medida vale por 30 dias, podendo ser prorrogada. A portaria, porém, não contempla o curso de Medicina e nem aulas práticas que devem ser feitas em laboratórios.
Flexibilização do ano letivo
Outra MP também prevê a dispensa da obrigatoriedade ao mínimo de dias letivos no ensino superior. A Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação igualmente aplica o mínimo de 200 dias delitivos para o ensino superior, excluindo os dias de exames finais, quando houver.
Dessa forma, essas ações têm como objetivo evitar a perda do ano letivo de 2020, segundo Abraham Weintraub, Ministro da Educação.
